Compressed air piping services in the UAE

A compressed air installation starts with the equipment it must supply. A production line may need a stable pressure at several machines while a workshop has short, intermittent demand. The distribution network must accommodate both the required flow and the permitted pressure loss between the compressor room and the final connection. We use those requirements to define the route, diameter, isolation arrangement and connection details before selecting a bill of materials.

Our scope can cover a new ring main, an extension to an existing line, machine drops, compressor-room connections and replacement of deteriorated pipework. Design, material supply, installation, pressure testing and commissioning should be stated separately in the quotation. That makes it clear who supplies filters, dryers, flexible connections, machine hoses, access equipment and electrical work. It also gives the factory a practical boundary for handing the completed system into operation.

For broader utility services, see our pipe installation company UAE page. A compressed air scope should not be reused unchanged for nitrogen, hydrogen or process fluids. Each service needs its own design conditions, material compatibility assessment, identification and commissioning requirements.

Aluminium SecureAir GI or stainless steel

Material selection depends on the service, the environment and the complete pipe system. A material name alone does not establish an allowable working pressure. Pipe, fittings, valves, seals and flexible connections must all be suitable at the design temperature. The lowest applicable component rating can limit the assembled installation. For SecureAir, use the current catalogue for the available sizes and check the selected components against the actual duty. The catalogue states a maximum operating pressure of 16 bar; it does not establish suitability for a higher-pressure compressor line.

Do not assume a modular aluminium range is suitable for 40 bar because another material on the same site is used at that pressure. Higher-pressure applications require a separate, verified component selection. The same care applies to compressed air with unusual oil carryover, elevated temperature or cleaning chemicals. Send the service conditions with the enquiry so that these checks happen before procurement.

SecureAir catalogue range

The SecureAir compressed air piping catalogue lists internal diameters of 20, 25, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 150 and 200 mm, with outside diameters of 22.7, 27.8, 43.5, 53.9, 67.7, 84.9, 105.3, 155.7 and 206.3 mm respectively. The listed pipe lengths are 2.9 m and 5.8 m. Use the internal diameter when assessing flow and pressure loss, and the outside diameter when coordinating supports and clearances.

The catalogue's maximum operating pressure is 16 bar. Confirm the pressure basis, temperature limits, selected fittings and installation conditions with the product documentation before specifying the system. That figure is not a 40 bar rating. Material selection for higher-pressure duty requires a separate review of the complete proposed assembly.

How we size a UAE ring main

Start with the compressor free air delivery and the operating profile of each user. Identify continuous consumers, intermittent tools and machines that start together. Record the minimum inlet pressure required by the most demanding equipment. That information is more useful than simply matching the outlet size of a compressor. Future expansion should be an explicit design allowance rather than an unexplained increase in pipe size.

Next, establish the actual route and the losses along it. Straight pipe is only part of the calculation: bends, tees, isolation valves, filters, dryers, hoses and quick couplings can affect the pressure available at the machine. A ring main has two possible flow paths, but demand is rarely shared equally around the loop. Branch positions and simultaneous loads need to be considered in the final network assessment.

Use our air pipe size calculator for an initial discussion. Record the flow units, pressure basis and length assumptions alongside the result. An estimate is not a substitute for checking the manufacturer's actual internal diameter, the network arrangement and component losses. We confirm these details as part of the agreed design scope.

Survey design installation testing and commissioning

The survey establishes the compressor-room connection, proposed main route, working heights and access restrictions. We ask the factory to identify production windows, areas where work is prohibited, and any equipment that cannot be isolated during a shift. A marked-up layout should show machine connections and planned expansion points. Photographs help clarify existing supports and congestion, but measurements remain necessary before fabrication.

The design stage converts that information into a route, material schedule and connection list. Agree the design pressure and temperature, minimum service pressure, air-quality requirement and inspection deliverables. If the project specifies ASME B31.3, the applicable edition, scope and inspection and test plan should be stated in the project documentation. A reference to a piping code does not establish a separate company certification.

Installation planning covers access equipment, permitted work hours, isolation responsibilities and protection of production equipment. The approved joining method and support arrangement must follow the selected system documentation. Before making a tie-in, the affected equipment must be isolated and made safe under the site's procedure. Unplanned live connections should not become a shortcut to an agreed shutdown.

Testing follows an approved procedure appropriate to the selected system and project code. The test medium, pressure, duration, acceptance criteria, boundaries and witness requirements need approval before the test. We do not publish a universal test pressure because it cannot be chosen safely from working pressure alone. Instruments, valves and equipment outside the test boundary must be identified and protected.

Commissioning checks the installed arrangement against the agreed scope. The handover should identify isolation valves, operating conditions and maintenance responsibilities. Where air purity is specified, agree the measurement location and evidence required. ISO 8573-1 classifies particles, water and oil; selecting a pipe material alone does not prove the delivered air meets a particular class.

Areas we cover

For Dubai enquiries, tell us whether the facility is in DIP, JAFZA, Al Quoz, Al Qusais or another industrial area. The location affects access arrangements, material delivery and the sequence of work around existing operations. Our Dubai contact point is the DIP 2 office. A project inside a free zone still requires the relevant customer, landlord and site access arrangements to be confirmed.

We also assess enquiries for KIZAD, ICAD and Mussafah in Abu Dhabi, and SAIF Zone, Hamriyah and Sharjah Industrial Area in Sharjah. For Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, provide the site location and preferred survey date. Coverage describes where enquiries are accepted; it does not imply an office or guaranteed response time in every emirate. Contact the Dubai office with the exact site location to arrange the survey and review the proposed scope.

UAE project reference

Our 2023 UAE beverage facility piping reference records supply and installation of stainless steel piping, chilled-water piping, HP line work and stainless steel cladding.

For a new enquiry involving similar utility work, identify each service separately and send its design conditions and connection requirements. A historical scope is useful context, while your project's material selection, inspection plan and handover requirements need their own assessment. See the Qatar and UAE piping project references for the recorded scope of other anonymous references.

What affects project cost in the UAE

Pipe diameter and installed length determine only part of the quotation. Branches, fittings, valves and compressor-room connections can change material quantities significantly. The number and position of machine drops also affect work at height and the practical installation sequence. A measured layout allows competing quotations to be compared against the same scope rather than an ambiguous price per metre.

Access is another cost driver. Working above an active production line may require a shutdown, a specific lift or temporary protection. Free-zone entry arrangements, delivery windows and permit responsibilities should be allocated in advance. Testing, inspection records, air-quality measurements and final drawings should be listed as included or excluded deliverables.

Request a measured project quotation rather than applying a generic rate per metre. Send the layout, operating conditions and number of drops, and arrange a free site survey with our Dubai office. The proposal should identify the materials, installation boundaries, access requirements and agreed test and handover deliverables so that the completed scope is clear.

Frequently asked questions

Which pipe is best for compressed air?

The appropriate choice depends on pressure, temperature, air quality, environment and the existing network. Modular aluminium, specified galvanized steel and stainless steel can each be appropriate when the complete system is rated for the duty.

Is PVC pipe safe for compressed air?

Ordinary exposed PVC water pipe should not be used for compressed air. Brittle failure can release fragments. Any engineered alternative needs explicit manufacturer approval for compressed gas service and review against the applicable project requirements.

How long does an installation take?

Duration depends on the route, pipe size, number of drops, access, permitted work hours and shutdown availability. We can propose a programme after reviewing the layout and confirming the installation and test scope.

Do you work in free zones?

We assess free-zone enquiries from our Dubai office. Confirm the specific location, customer requirements, access permits and any contractor registration requirements before agreeing mobilisation. Coverage does not itself establish approval by an authority.

Can an existing compressed air network be extended?

Often it can, after its condition, pressure rating, capacity and connection details are checked. The tie-in plan must identify isolation arrangements and the effect of new demand on the existing system.

Do you provide pressure testing?

Pressure testing can form part of the agreed installation scope. The approved project procedure defines the test boundaries, medium, pressure, acceptance criteria and records. Confirm any third-party witness requirement in the enquiry.

What information do you need for a quotation?

Send the site location, compressor free air delivery, working pressure, machine requirements, approximate route, number of drops, preferred material and available shutdown window. Include drawings or photographs where permitted.

Does aluminium pipe guarantee clean air?

No. Air purity depends on the intake air, compressor, treatment equipment, distribution condition and point-of-use controls. Specify the required particle, water and oil classes and how compliance will be verified.
